The Muni Update
Aug 17, 2025

Good Morning,
It's been a beautiful week for golf at The Muni. We hosted the Unified Golf Event last Sunday with 31 teams participating. This event allows athletes from the Special Olympics to play with a sponsor and complete nine holes of golf together. This is one of my favorite events of the year. It is a fun filled morning of golf and camaraderie with nothing but positivity. I would encourage anyone interested to sign up as a sponsor for next year's event. Unfortunately I missed this year's event due to the birth of my grandson.
On Monday we hosted the Stateline Senior men for their second event of the golf season. We will also be hosting the SGOWA senior men tomorrow morning for a scheduled event. The senior men and senior ladies make multiple stops at The Muni, during the season, and we look forward to seeing them each time. It's always a relaxed atmosphere with the main focus on having a good time playing golf.
On Friday we hosted the annual YMCA fundraiser golf event. This outing helps raise money for the youth in our community to participate in activities or even a membership at the YMCA. There were 92 golfers participating to help support our area youth. We dodged a severe thunderstorm prior to the start and everyone had a great time.
Saturday we hosted the Birchard Family reunion with tee times from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM. This is an annual event for their family and it was great to see them all having a great time together. Open golf was available during the day as well as the reunion.
Today we are hosting a Couple's golf event starting in a few minutes. There will be open golf available sometime after noon today. Hopefully we can stay clear of any severe weather and complete this event on time and still allow our open golfers to enjoy the afternoon and evening hours.
Open golf has been very busy every day of the week for the entire golf season. We used to have a couple days a week that were a little slower than others but that is no longer the case. It's wonderful to see all of the familiar faces each day and equally as nice to welcome the new golfers that visit our course on a daily basis. We truly appreciate each and everyone of you that supports The Muni.
Our maintenance staff has been very busy, once again, trying to keep up with the growing conditions. I have never experienced an NW Iowa summer where the humidity is so high throughout the entire day. Add in all of the rainfall and it's a perfect weather pattern for grass to grow and grow and grow.
With these weather conditions our daily focus is simply to stay on top of our maintenance practices. Staff has been mowing fairways approximately four times a week. Normally during this time of the year we are starting to see drought conditions and non-irrigated areas start to go dormant, which cuts down on mowing frequency. Our rough is also a constant battle trying to keep it manicured at an acceptable height that doesn't slow down play. The staff has been doing a remarkable job and their dedication and pride are greatly appreciated.
Our clubhouse staff has done a wonderful job with our daily clubhouse operations this season. It has been one of the busiest summers we have experienced and they have handled it with ease. School is getting close to starting back up and quite a few of our staff members will be transitioning back to the classroom very soon. I am very thankful for each and everyone of them and the dedication they put into their work at The Muni. Thankfully each of them continue to come back to work year after year.
I was away from the golf course for the early part of August so we could be with our daughter for the birth of our grandson. The little guy wanted to enter the world 6.5 weeks early and we are very thankful mom and baby are both doing wonderful.
It's been a couple of weeks since I've been able to create a golf tip video for everyone. This week's video touches on our daily maintenance practices and trying to complete those in a timely manner while our golfers are enjoying the course at the same time. We ask the golfers to please be patient and give us a little bit of time to finish what we are doing so we can safely move out of the way and let you continue your round of golf.
I hope everyone enjoys the remainder of the weekend. We look forward to seeing you swing into The Muni if you have some free recreational time. Please remember, golf is a game that is meant to have fun and enjoy it with your playing partners. Please treat the golf course and other golfers with respect. We want you to play The Muni, "Just for the Fun of It!"
