The Muni Update
Aug 3, 2025

Good Morning,
Well, it's been another crazy week of weather at The Muni and NW Iowa in general. The derecho, on Monday night, left a lot of small tree debris scattered throughout the golf course. We also had eight large trees blown over during the storm. There were five different storms that produced a total of 3.1" of rainfall at the golf course in the past week.
Fortunately we were able to have the majority of the golf course mowed on Monday morning prior to the storm. We started mowing about 5:00 AM in order to get over the majority of the course by late morning. The golf course was looking great until the storm.
Tuesday morning, staff cleaned up all of the small debris around the golf course and dropped all of the large trees to the ground as a safety precaution. The golf course was too wet for us to complete much of our daily mowing practices and was closed until 2:00 PM for golfers.
Maintenance staff spent quite a bit of Tuesday and Wednesday helping the Country Club staff clean up their grounds in preparation for the NW Amateur golf tournament which started on Thursday. The Country Club lost over 50 large trees and major damage to over 200 other trees. Our staff brought rough units to mow most of the day Wednesday helping their staff get the course back in great shape leading up to the tournament.
We have always had a great working relationship with the Country Club staff and it is such a benefit to both golf courses to have the support of one another.
A couple additional storms resulted in saturated conditions for yet another day on Wednesday. There was a lot of standing water in areas but the majority of the golfers were courteous with proper golf cart etiquette. We still have a few golfers that think wet conditions turn into an automatic playland with carts. I appreciate the people that took the time to correct that behavior when witnessed on the golf course.
Thursday we tried to get some mowing completed but it was still too saturated. Staff spent the day removing the large trees from the golf course and hauling the debris to the maintenance shed surrounds or the south end of the golf course.
Friday morning was the first time we were able to mow fairways and try to catch up on mowing the rough. Our staff did a great job getting the golf course back into great condition leading into the weekend. It is still very wet but conditions are improving each day.
This season has been spent mostly on daily maintenance practices due to high temperatures and above normal precipitation that does not seem to end. We have not been able to get to the majority of our projects that were planned for this summer. Some of the projects on hold include:
- Shelter painting, landscaping, and benches
- Painting tee signs
- Treating ash trees and removing dead ash trees
- Landscaping renovation around the golf course
I spent Monday morning and Monday night spraying the majority of the tees, green surrounds, fairways, and rough with an insecticide to control the presence of grubs on the golf course. I finished spraying Monday night just a few minutes before the storm rolled into town. This treatment will help limit the amount of skunk damage around the golf course when they are digging for grubs.
I am currently out of town dealing with a family medical emergency. There is no timeframe on how long I will be gone. I remain in constant contact with staff to ensure daily operations are running smoothly.
Please reach out by email or text if there is anything additional needed from me. Enjoy the remainder of the weekend.
