Good Morning,

For the past two weeks the golf course has remained very busy daily. The golf leagues will wind down at the end of the month and we still have quite a few golf events scheduled. This month we hosted the Smiley Open, The Special Olympics, Several senior golf events, the YMCA fundraiser, and the Couples tournament today. Upcoming events include the SGOWA group on Monday, ServPro, league tournaments, the police tournament, more senior groups, and a cross country meet.

The few days of measurable precipitation along with reduced temperatures, have finally helped the golf course conditions. Staff has been very busy with daily maintenance practices to keep the golf course looking great. I’m very pleased with the course conditions at this time of the season. Hats off to the great grounds staff.

The cart path overlay project continues to move forward. The bid opening was this past Tuesday afternoon at City Hall. Blacktop Service Company submitted the low bid for a total cost of $241,134.00. After engineering fees are applied, the project will be well below the engineering estimate.

Staff will start preparing for this project tentatively scheduled for mid-October pending council approval of the bid. I will create traffic control plans for the contractor and their equipment. All traffic will be controlled to limit the amount of damage to the golf course during this project. The golf course will close during the cart path overlay. I will continue to provide updates as the project moves forward.

This past week we aerified all of the golf greens and most of the collars. We have completed this aerification process in each of the past three months. This lessens localized dry spots and improves water penetration through the soil profile. We perform this aeration using solid needle tines slightly larger than a pencil.

In October, staff will core aerify greens to help eliminate some of the organic matter built up in the soil profile. This project will be completed the week the golf course closes for the cart path overlay project.

Friday morning we held the public sale of our 2012 Yamaha rental carts. The information was posted for two weeks and the final sale details were updated on Wednesday. The first person was in line at 2:30 PM on Thursday. By midnight the line extended out of the parking lot at the clubhouse. By 5:30 AM the line extended several blocks south on 4th Ave SW. At 8:00 AM the first two carts were purchased, and the final rental cart completed the sale of all 15 carts at 8:17 AM on Friday.

Over 300 people contacted us regarding the sale of the golf carts. I never dreamt this process would turn into the rental cartageddon it became. The entire process went very smoothly. The majority of people calling or stopping in to look at carts were respectful and polite. The next time we sell rental carts it will most likely be an auction format on a specified date. In the end, the golf course collected $10,500 more than the trade-in value offered when the new carts were purchased.

The Summer has gone by rather quickly as it always seems to do. Teachers and students are starting to prepare for the start of the new school year. Quite a few of our seasonal team members are returning to school. Thank you to everyone who has been a part of the team for another great season at The Muni!
