Good Morning,
This past week the weather continued to fluctuate, but there were still some nice golf days. The golf course continues to progress and everything looks very nice for this time of the season. We have increased the frequency of mowing greens and other areas of the golf course. Between the irrigation system and precipitation, the course is really getting a nice green hue.
The Street Division returned to the site to help us continue jetting the tile lines on the SE corner of the golf course. We addressed three additional tiles that drain into the wetlands pond behind #12 green. The first tile was cleaned to a distance of 365 feet. The second tile hit a blockage 150 feet from the outlet. The third tile was damaged at the outlet. We will dig up two of these tiles next week to make the necessary repairs.

Staff started hauling new sand to about a dozen traps around the golf course. We need to order additional sand next week to continue the project. The fairway bunkers on most of the golf course still need addressing. Adding new sand will make these traps more player-friendly. Due to the heavy winds and open Winter, we lost a significant amount of sand across the golf course. We address the addition of new sand annually.
I monitored each irrigation cycle to observe its function across the golf course. Several cracked lateral lines needed repair. This issue happens when the snow melted off the course in December. If an irrigation head has a crack or damaged snap ring it allows snowmelt to drain back into the line. Because there is no insulation blanket on the turf, the cold temperatures freeze the line causing it to expand and crack. We completed the necessary repairs by the end of the day Friday.

#2 Finished Irrigation Repair 4-24-26.jpegOn Wednesday we completed planting 30 new trees at the golf course. Thirty additional trees will be planted this Fall, with thirty more in the Spring of 2027. Parks Director Bob Fullhart secured a grant through the Iowa DNR, which funded these trees. Christians Sheet Metal and HVAC was on site to help plant the trees.
Tree Planting (2) 4-22-26.jpegOn Friday, The Mayor read the proclamation for Arbor Day and helped us plant a new tree next to the practice green. This proclamation is part of the process for the City of Spencer to remain a Tree USA city.
Arbor Day (2) 2026.JPGThis morning we will host our first golf tournament of the 2026 season. It is a little chilly but we have a decent number of teams registered for the event. It will be a shotgun start at 10:00 with open golf to follow this afternoon.
