Good Morning,
The Golf Board has spent considerable time working on our new Donor Board in the clubhouse. We are asking for community support to help restore our tree population on the grounds. I have attached information about this project and a short video.
The past week was not exactly what we have been used to during the 2026 golf season. Cooler temperatures, windy conditions, and precipitation. Tee times definitely declined every day of the week. There was a total of 1.4 inches of rainfall.
Golf leagues have finished and the World’s Greatest County Fair are always factors in reduced golf traffic by mid-September. Starting tomorrow, all-day golf, including a rental cart, will only cost $35. This is a great Fall promotion for people visiting Spencer or for anyone who doesn’t play golf enough to purchase a season pass. Online tee times are available.
Monday morning, our Senior golf event was cancelled due to the weather. However staff worked through the rain to mow the tees and fairways in preparation for the fertilizer application Tuesday morning. We applied 1.5 pounds of nitrogen per 1000 square feet of turfgrass on the tees, fairways, green surrounds, and some areas of the rough.
The rainfall and light irrigation cycles worked the fertilizer prill through the turf canopy to the crown of the plant. This fertilizer application will provide necessary plant nutrition through the remainder of the season and will be readily available when soil temperatures exceed 50 degrees in the Spring of 2027.
I also sprayed greens with a fungicide, insecticide, and foliar fertilizer on Tuesday morning. The fungicide will control the dollar spot fungus that was present on several greens. The insecticide will control cutworms on the greens. The foliar fertilizer will provide plant nutrients for the next couple of weeks.
The remainder of the week involved normal daily maintenance practices. We slightly reduced mowing frequencies due to the fertilizer application and rainfall. This gave us some time to work on equipment and other projects in the shop.
This coming week I will attend a preconstruction meeting with the engineer and contractor regarding the cart path overlay project scheduled for later in October. I’m very excited to get this project started.
